Police Officer Will Be Stationed In Neshaminy High School

There will be an officer stationed within Neshaminy High School by the time students return from winter break.

During the Monday night Middletown Township Board of Supervisors meeting, the board voted to prepare and execute an agreement with the school district for the position of the officer.

Robert Weber is the law enforcer that is to become the school resource officer.

According to Chief Joseph Bartorilla, the officer will be based out of the high school but will spend time in the middle schools as well. The dedicated police officer will not take away from the pop-in program that the police force currently utilizes.

According to information discussed at the meeting, the school district has agreed to contribute $45,000 to the salary of Weber, a 14 year veteran of the force. According to the police chief, starting next year, the government bodies will pursue a grant to help reduce the cost.

Officer Robert Weber will begin training in the school starting on Dec. 29, while the students are on break. By the time they return on Jan. 5, Weber will have a full week of training. The officer will be in full uniform and have an office with a computer with which he can make reports.

According to the Bartorilla, public safety and providing safety for the schools are the number one priority. He explained that the agreement will build a relationship between the police department and the Neshaminy School District.

“We are happy to be working with Chief Bartorilla, and appreciate that he reached out to get the process of obtaining a School Resource Officer started. We have enjoyed a great relationship with all the police departments in the district, and this will increase that cooperation. Having a dedicated officer in the schools is a great way to build rapport between the police and our students, and to identify and alleviate potential problems before they escalate,” Neshaminy spokesman Chris Stanley said.

The district currently employs several security guards to handle safety at its facilities.
