The Target on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown was packed with excited second-grade students from Walter Miller Elementary School in Levittown last Friday morning.
The students, who came in two yellow school buses, filled the store’s aisle in search of the perfect gifts for several needy families their class had “adopted” for the holiday season.

Organizers explained the kids each had to raise money through a “Random Act of Kindness” coupon book. Family and friends of the students could purchase coupons in exchange for various chores. In total, each group of students and a chaperone had just under $100 to spend on gifts.
“It’s great to give to someone else,” second-grader William Sheridan said. Giggling as he looked in the toy aisle, he added, “it’s a lot of fun to waste money.”
Colleen Krause of Middletown, who came with her son, said the event is good for the students and helps families in the community.

In preparation for the event, extra Target staff was brought in and additional checkout lanes were opened so students could get in and out, Tom Ellis, general manager of the Target store, said.
In total, the event will help five families.

“It is what the holidays are all about,” Ellis said.
