SEPTA Narrowly Avoids Strike With Transport Workers Union

SEPTA narrowly avoided a strike in parts of its transit division.

Transport Workers Union Local 234 and SEPTA came to a tentative two-year contract deal late Friday, according to the transit agency and union.

Willie Brown, president of Transport Workers Union Local 234, noted to CBSPhilly.com: “It’s two years, with wage increases. That’s it. I have to get it to my union members first,”

According to members on both sides of discussion, both entities had to move to come to agreement and members of the union are expected to vote on Friday Nov. 7, according to CBSPhilly.com.

“I think it is a fair contract for everybody,” SEPTA Board Chairman Pat Deon said, according to Philly.com.

The SEPTA workers have been without a contract since March.

Brown last lead the union in a 2009 strike with little notice, according to the Associated Press.

The union represents about 5,000 SEPTA employees that range from bus drivers to subway operators and mechanics.
