Event organizers and patrons battled inclement weather for the first few hours of the fifth annual Tullytown Fire Prevention Event Saturday.

The event, organized by Deputy Chief Dale Mastrull of the Tullytown Fire Company, began with a slow start as lingering rains soaked the event parking lot. The rain cleared up, however, and many more patrons came out to learn the value of fire safety.

According to Deputy Chief Mastrull, the event, in years past, brings around 500 people out to learn.
โFire safety is number one, how to be prepared, [and so that kids] know that firefighters are friends,โ explained Mastrull.
The deputy chief stressed the importance of regular fire drills in the home and the necessity of checking smoke alarms on a monthly basis.

During the event, children were able to experience hands-on learning through a stove fire demonstration where proper fire fighting protocol was explained, the live โcuttingโ of a car where the Edgely Fire Company showed the proper extrication of someone trapped in a vehicle.
A lot of effort goes in to planning an event of this caliber. As explained by Mastrull, the event usually enters planning stages in late spring or early summer. โI start thinking about the following year right after the previous event,โ said Mastrull.

โIt keeps growing with the community people coming out every year,โ said Mastrull.

A number of fire companies were present at the event, including Bristol Consolidated, American Hook Hose and Ladder, The Third District Fire Company, the Yardley Makefield Fire Company. Other present organizations included the Tullytown Police Department and the American Red Cross.
โIt’s a great partnership, and a good day,โ said Collins, an employee of Home Depot, the main sponsor of the event.
