Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) has urged Federal law enforcement authorities to investigate potential criminal activity at the Philadelphia VA Regional Office.

This news comes only oneย day afterย LevittownNow.com reported on the document issued by the VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) Monday night, concerning data manipulation and the destruction of mail which occurred at various VA Regional Offices across the country, including the Philadelphia office.

The report found that VA Regional Office Staff may be responsible for manipulating data associated with veterans benefits, forcing some to be backlogged for more than two years.

“I urge you to consider opening an investigation into these allegations. The unlawful destruction of veterans’ claims and correspondence is a serious issue,” said Fitzpatrick in a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. “The fact that data may have been manipulated so that certain VA supervisors and employees could get bonuses, at the expenses of veterans’ pension and disability claims languishing in the backlog, is unconscionable and deserving of future investigation.”

Congressman Fitzpatrick said about 400 local veterans had died waiting for such backlogged benefits as a result.
