While the condition of the girl and the female driver of the Jeep Liberty SUV that were involved in Tuesday morning wreck at the corner of Green Lane and Mill Creek Road wasn’t available Wednesday evening, Sgt. Chuck Burns said the two were both in stable condition the previous night.

“I would have to believe that the child restraint played a role,” Burns said. “It was a booster seat type of restraint. The child was securely held in place when the collision occurred, which kept her from being thrown about.”

The SUV and a red Ford F250 work truck were involved in the wreck around 9 a.m. Multiple fire companies and ambulances were called to the scene.

Burns said an initial investigation indicates the Jeep “disregarded a red traffic signal and was subsequently broadsided by the Ford F-250 which had the right of way.”

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that children restrained in booster seats are 60 percent more safe than children just wearing a regular seatbelt.

Officer Charles Winik is continuing to investigate the crash.
