Bucks County Community College has launched a year-long celebration of its 50thย anniversary, and invites the public to join in by sharing photos and memories, and attending several special events.
The celebration was launched at the collegeโs 48thย annual commencement May 22 by Board of Trustees chairย Blake Eisenhart, who recalled the collegeโs beginnings and how far it has come in five decades.
โBucks County Community College has achieved the rare distinction of being a truly global institution of higher learning,โ said Eisenhart.ย โStella Elkins Tyler, an accomplished sculptor and artist of her time, and her husband George, would be very proud of the college that began, and has flourished, on their beautiful estate.โ
On June 22 1964, the Bucks County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution to sponsor Bucks County Community College under the provisions of Pennsylvaniaโs Community College Act of 1963 (Act 484). Since opening its doors a year later as the first public two-year college in Bucks County, the College has educated more than a million people.
From its modest beginnings on the former Tyler estate, Bucks has grown to three campuses, an online virtual campus, Continuing Education, and a Public Safety Training Center that prepares first-responders across the globe. Today, successful Bucks graduates transfer to four-year colleges and universities or directly launch a career.
The public is invited to visitย www.bucks.edu/goldenย to submit memories and photos and sign the guestbook.ย Coming soon, there will be an opportunity to purchase a commemorative Mercer tile in honor of the anniversary. Other celebrations include a formal groundbreaking for a new science centerย June 12ย on the Newtown campus, a faculty lecture series open to the public at each campus, the premier of commissioned music and artworkย October 11, a wall honoring โ50 Points of Service,โ commemorating service to the community by students, faculty, and staff, and a community day planned for spring 2015.
