The black bear that eluded Bensalem police and state wildlife officials late last week was euthanized after suffering a broken leg.

“No one has come forward claiming to have struck the bear with their vehicle,” police said in a statement.
Officials reported the bear was around 175 pounds and likely about a year old.
Authorities first responded to the area of Bensalem Boulevard Friday morning after the bear was spotted. Police closed a portion of the road and looked, but the bear vanished by mid-morning.

The fiasco captured the eyes of local television stations, which dispatched helicopters in an attempt to capture images of the bear.

“We ask residents to cover their trash, cover their grills and take any other precautions necessary,” police said in a statement on Friday.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission was dispatched Friday morning and set up traps with maple syrup and doughnuts Sunday night.
It was about a year ago when a black bear hung out throughout Lower Bucks County. That bear is believed by officials to have swam to New Jersey, where it was captured.
