The officer said Vincente Cruz, 20, of Bristol, appeared to be “highly intoxicated” when he was found him down the block, according to court papers.
The officer told the Cruz, who did not speak English, that he was placing him under arrest for trespassing and public intoxication. When the officer tried to take Cruz into custody, court papers say, the 20 year old began to spin away and fight.
The officer wrestled Cruz and tried to use a Taser, but the non-lethal weapon did not fire correctly, police said. They added that the officer called for assistance and was finally able to get Cruz under control.

The officer suffered a sprained thumb and contusion, police said.
One of the owners of the Watson Avenue property told police Cruz was spotted sleeping twice there and fled both times when discovered, court papers say.
Cruz was charged with criminal trespass, resisting arrest, public drunkenness and escape. He was sent to county jail on 10 percent of $5,000.
