A blue Suzuki driven by a 26-year-old Levittown resident broke down on the shoulder of I-95, police said. The man and his passenger, Benjamin Melendez, 30, of Trenton, called a friend for help.

The friend arrived and Melendez was struck by mirror of an oncoming Lexus as he walked to the friend’s vehicle, police said. The Levittown man reportedly went to pull the 30-year-old from the highway after he saw Melendez sitting up in the right lane and both were hit by a Hyundai SUV.

Police said the impact of the second car killed Melendez and sent the Levittown resident to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown. The 26 year old’s condition was not available as of press time.

The possibility that both men who were struck were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash is under investigation, police said.

Both drivers of the striking vehicles stopped.
