Pennsbury Student Qualifies for Prestigious Event

Provided by the Pennsbury School District:

In February, 70 Pennsbury students participated in the American Mathematics Competition. Three of those students, Ninad Mahajan (9th), Alex Friedman (11th), and Jacob Wachspress (11th), advanced on to the AIME, American Invitational Mathematics Examination.  “The purpose of these competitions is to spur interest in Mathematics and to develop talent through problem-solving in a timed format,” explains PHS Mathematics teacher, Stacy Garretson, who coordinates the AMC testing at Pennsbury High School.

The AIME results are in and Jacob Wachspress has qualified for the USAMO, or the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, a prestigious event.  Just 265 students from thousands of AIME participants qualified to take the USAMO.  Jacob is one of five students in the state of Pennsylvania and the only student in Bucks County who will be taking the USAMO.  The test will consist of six essay-proof questions to be solved over two days in nine hours — that’s three questions for 4.5 hours each day. The test will take place on April 29th and 30th. The 12 top-scoring students will be honored at an award ceremony held in Washington, D.C. on June 2nd.

“We take great pride in Jacob’s achievement, and we wish him all the best!” said Ms Garretson.
