Nightmare on the Turnpike: Up to 100 Vehicles Pile Up in Crashes

The Pennsylvania Turnpike between Bristol Township and Willow Grove is a nightmare.

Several accidents, one involving upwards of 20 cars, have stopped traffic on both directions the major highway, according to reports from multiple outlets. In at least one crash, vehicles were overturned and injuries were reported.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority has implemented the “Plan X” protocol, which means the turnpike will likely be closed for the next several hours.

The crashes started piling up around 8 a.m. Fire, police and EMS from state and local municipalities responded to the scenes.

One of the larger accidents near Route 1 in Bensalem appears to involved dozens of cars. Video aired on NBC 10 showed cars sandwiched between large tractor-trailers.

Scanner reports indicate medics were traveling from crash site to crash site to check on drivers.
