A dwelling fire on the 200 block of Otter Street in Bristol Borough late Wednesday night caused significant damage to the home, fire officials said Thursday morning.
The fire, which was called in at a little after 11 p.m., started, “under the first floor in the exterior wall of the house and extended up inside the wall,” according to Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack.

Several first responder companies were on scene and knocked down the fire quickly, officials said. Bath Street from Buckley to Pond Street was blocked off by fire crews.
The fire was ignited by a “defective chimney-flue pipe connection,” Slack said. The defect “allowed heat to escape directly on (to) wood structural members inside the wall causing them to ignite,” he added.
Witnesses on scene told LevitownNow.com the homeowner tried to put the flames out with his own fire extinguisher prior to firefighters companies arriving on scene.

Smoke rolled up and down Otter Street as firefighters fought the blaze in frigid conditions, which created a problem on scene that was solved quickly, Slack said.
“The first hydrant the fire department attempted to use was frozen. A second functioning hydrant was quickly located and used. The frozen hydrant had no effect on the fire department operations,” he said.

Aqua Water was seen servicing fire hydrants in Bristol early this morning, a resident shared.
No one was injured in the fire Slack said.
