Ice Jam Sparks River Flooding Concerns

While the Delaware River in Bristol Borough seemed peaceful Wednesday afternoon, officials are concerned of flooding that could be caused when a large ice jam in Trenton breaks.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for parts of Lower Bucks and Philadelphia counties, and Burlington and Mercer counties in New Jersey on Wednesday. The watch is specifically for areas near the river.

A large ice jam piled up near Trenton and has caused water to fill to the banks of the river for a few miles back, the National Weather Service said in a statement.

“When this ice jam breaks, there may be enough water behind the jam to cause flash flooding downstream,” the watch statement says. Forecasters report they are unable to predict how high river levels will rise once the ice jam breaks and warn navigation equipment and infrastructure could be damaged.

Temperatures are expected to be below freezing through Wednesday evening and into Thursday, officials say. However, the coming days call for above-freezing temperatures.
