A worker was killed in a salt pile collapse at the port in Falls Township Thursday afternoon.
The man, whose name and age is not available as of press time, was killed after a large pile of rock salt collapsed on top of a piece of construction equipment, officials said. According to scanner traffic, the pile was around 100 feet tall.

Firefighters worked to try to rescue the man, but it was too late and the rescue quickly became a recovery operation. The victim was found deceased in the cab of piece of equipment.
“It was like digging a hole in the beach. The sides kept caving in when we were digging him out. We used heavy machinery and he was in the cab still,” Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito.
Scanner reports indicated multiple fire companies were called to the the port around 3:30 p.m.

The port is on property the Waste Management landfill and is leased by International Salt.
The port has a large quantities of rock salt that is delivered by boat, mainly from South America.

As of 6:20 p.m., the coroner was still at the scene.
