Stephen C. Welch, 27, was charged recently with falsifying answers about whether he could own a firearm on a federal form. State police found the 27-year-old was ineligible to have a firearm and alerted Tullytown police, who arrested Welch, court papers say.

Welch went to Mike’s Sporting Goods on Levittown Parkway in mid-November 2012 and filled out a federal firearms transfer form and lied on two questions.

When the form was checked by authorities, they discovered a previous mental health commitment and a conviction on a charge of possession of a weapon on school property were in his past. Welch did not mention the two incidents on the paperwork, police said.

Court papers note Welch’s signature on the form confirms he is agreeing that all information he is providing is true.

Welch is charged with unsworn falsification to authorities and materially false written statement. He was arraigned and is free on 10 percent of $30,000 bail.
