Monday and Thursdays were like a holiday for four-year-old Mycal Bickings. It’s the days his “buddies” from Republic Services, Bristol Township’s soon-to-be former waste hauler, came to his Red Cedar neighborhood to collect the trash.

Over the past two years, Mycal and trashmen Derrick Hill and Camay Ulysse have formed a special bond, something unique that is likely to bring a smile to your face.

“Mycal started watching the guys and they guys started to notice him watching from the window,” Mycal’s mother, Debb Pirollo Bickings said. “He wouldn’t stop watching them. Then for his birthday, he said he wanted a trash party.”

Bickings called Republic Services for some help planning Mycal’s trash-themed third birthday party. Shortly after, a big blue trash truck arrived. Hill and Ulysse delivered more than a dozen trash-themed coloring books and two small trash cans for Mycal.

From there, the bond between the trashmen and Mycal grew. They always waved and sometimes even came up to the window to say “hi” to their “blond-haired little buddy,” Bickings said.

“It was on the border of weird and really cool,” Mycal’s mother said with a chuckle.

Mycal was “devastated” when he heard last Thursday would be the last day his buddies on the trash truck would no longer be around his block, Bickings said.

Earlier in December, the Bristol Township Council voted to hire Waste Management to pickup the towns trash and recyclable waste starting in the new year. The move came days before Mycal received some toys as Christmas gifts from Hill and Ulysse.

In a moment recorded and shared on YouTube, Hill and Ulysse let Mycal throw his family’s trash in the back of the big blue truck. The two give their buddy hugs and  high-fives. The expression on Mycal’s face is priceless.

After Hill and Ulysse’s final pickup through Red Cedar, company officials called Mycal’s family and invited him to their regional facility. The spunky four-year-old will be able to have lunch with his buddies and ride on a Republic Services truck.

Even though Hill and Ulysse won’t be picking up the Bickings’ trash, the two said they’ll still return to see their buddy.
