Christina Aguilera said she wanted Pennsbury grad Matthew Schuler get back to his roots on Monday night’s episode of “The Voice.”

The 20-year-old son and grandson of ministers performed a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Tears welled up in the eyes of Schuler’s mother during the performance. The studio audience seemed taken as the song was performed during the televised broadcast.

After the song, Aguilera, who is the young man’s coach, and the other judge praised Schuler’s moving rendition of the song.

“You are a gift and you are so blessed. I appreciate you, and I am very humbled and very happy you chose me as your coach,” Aguilera  said.

A review of the performance from Wall Street Journal said Schuler “stole the show … again.”

The voting results will be revealed Tuesday starting at 9 p.m. on the hit NBC show.

The 20-year-old Lower Makefield resident made show history for the quickest time that all four judges hit their buttons. A hit of the button means they wanted Schuler on their team during his cover of Young the Giant’s 2011 hit single “Cough Syrup.” He is now in the top 12 contestants this season.
