The tobacco-free policy that the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors approved earlier in the summer has been met with a positive response from residents, according to Township Manager Stephanie Teoli.
All of the township’s parks feature signs that advise of the ordinance and reads, “Young Lungs at Play.”

Teoli said Friday that several residents have provided positive feed back of the policy, which was established due to the “negative health effects and influence tobacco use has on children,” according to a township newsletter.
The ordinance says there is a tobacco-free zone in areas within 50 feet of active recreation including athletic fields, basketball courts, hockey rinks, playgrounds and tennis courts.
Support of residents, coaches and parents was sought when the ordinance was passed 5-0 at the July 22 meeting.

The Young Lungs at Play program is supported by the state Department of Health.
In October 2012, Falls Township enacted a similar ordinance. Morrisville Borough already has a similar policy on the books.
