You may have noticed that the flags at most government buildings in the area are flying at half staff. The answer why: Governor Tom Corbett declared the flags be raised to half staff to honor State Representative Dick Hess (R-PA78) of Bedford County, who died Friday at the age of 74.
The public servant recent underwent a leg surgery in Pittsburgh and complications from the procedure killed him.

The 74-year-old, who had served in local and state government since the 1960s, “died peacefully surrounded by family,” according to a statement from Hess’ family.
Up until his death, Hess chaired the House Transportation Committee.
Corbett said flags would be displayed at half staff until Hess’ funeral Tuesday afternoon.
