Police Cracking Down on Impaired Driving Over Holiday Weekend

Police across the area and state will be stepping up impaired driving enforcement through the Labor Day weekend.

The patrols are part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over effort, which being partly funded by $4.2 million in federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

During last year’s Labor Day weekend, PennDOT said there were 125 alcohol-related wrecks and eight fatalities as well as 30 drug-related crashes.

“As the Labor Day holiday approaches we are focusing on the issue of impaired driving, and unfortunately drug-related crashes are increasing in number,”PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said in a statement. “Crashes and deaths involving impaired drivers are completely preventable. We urge motorists to drive sober, unimpaired by drugs or alcohol.”

Between 2011 and 2012, impaired driving crashes, while fatalities decreased.
