Crews from the Coast Guard, Philadelphia police, a Virginia water rescue team and around Bucks County are searching the Neshaminy Creek in Bensalem and Middletown for two missing teens who were reported to be swept away in the currents late Tuesday night.

Specially-trained crews spent the night searching before they were called off early Wednesday morning.  The large search, which involved multiple helicopters, began again around at 7 a.m.

As of 12:30 p.m., the two had not been found. Officials said the effort is a “recovery.”

Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran said the search and recovery teams would search as long as necessary.

Two Bensalem teens – 18 and 19 years old – were swimming with another teen in the area of Neshaminy Falls when the current took  them away at around 10:30 p.m. The one teen made to shore while the 18 and 18 year olds did not, officials said. The lone teen called 9-1-1 to report his friends were missing, and a slew of emergency crews responded to the area.

Family of the teens stood outside the Trevose Fire Company substation on Bristol Road in Bensalem. Officials and clergy stood talking to the gathered family.

Harran said the teens parked their cars at the Neshaminy Falls train station, across from the fire station, and walked to the water to swim. He added that the teens entered the falls area, which is a popular swimming spot, on the Bensalem side of the raging creek.

The creek was swollen due to heavy rain storms that moved through Monday night and Tuesday.

Dozens of emergency personnel were searching the river as of noon.
