SEPTA announced yesterday it is designating Wednesday May 1 as SEPTA Safetyย Awarenessย Day. ย The purpose is remind the public of the dangers of walking along , playing or cutting across train and trolley tracks, rail yards and depots.
The theme for ย the day is “Make the Safe Choice.”

Jerri Williams, director of media relations, said in the press release, “Rail fatalities, accidental and intentional are a national problem. Through the first four months of 2013 there have been eight deaths involving SEPTA’s Regional Rail and broad Street Lines. Sadly that puts the authority on a pace this year that could exceed the 12 deaths on all modes ย in 2012.”
During the morning rush, 500 authority employees, City Year Corps members and other transit partners will distribute educational materials and answer safety questions at more than 160 SEPTA stations in the Philadelphia region. Safety messages, will also be displayed on SEPTA vehicles and throughout the entire SEPTA system.

The rush hour blitz will culminate with a 9:30 a.m. ย press conference to spread the message “that SEPTA values safety.”
SEPTA General Manager Joe Casey and Scott Sauer Director of System Safety and Risk Management ย will be on hand for the event set to take place near tracks of the West Trenton Line, between the Somerton and Trevose Stations, ย across ย from 450 Philmont avenue in Feasterville-Trevose.

Safety Day, the press release says, is not just a one day event, “its day one of an effort to get everyone to commit to safety while on SEPTA property.
