It’s a Lower Bucks County tradition. Free water ice from Rita’s to mark the first day of spring.

All Rita’s Italian Ice locations will be offering free water ice cups to help welcome spring on Wednesday, March 20 from noon to 9 p.m.

It’s a tradition the company said they have been taking part in for 20 years. Last year, Rita’s gave away 1.2 million cups of their famous water ice on the first day of spring, according to the Bensalem-based company.

In accordance with the 21st Century, Rita’s is holding a contest asking customers to photograph their “first taste of spring” and post it on social media with the hashtag #RitasFirstDayofSpring. The person behind the top photo will win a year of free ice cream, Rita’s said.

Former Philadelphia firefighter Bob Tumolo started the chain in Bensalem in 1984. Since then, the company has been sold and expanded with stores across the globe.
