A man in his mid-50s was found dead inside the bathroom at the Dick’s Sporting Goods store onย Commerce Boulevard in Falls Township late Saturday night, police said.

The incident all started when the man entered the gun section of the store at 7 p.m. and asked to see aย 12-gauge shotgun. The suspect then pulled a handgun on the clerk and asked him to remove the gun lock from the shotgun and to call the police, spokesperson Lt. Hank Ward said. Around that moment, the man grabbed ammunition and loaded the gun.

As store employees worked to clear the building, police said they systematically began clearing the store and “confronted” the man. Ward told reporters next ran into the bathroom and was not heard from in over three hours.

The Middletown man engaged in a standoff with police in that township in 2002 and had to be involuntarily committed for mental health issues in 2010, police said. Few further details about his life were available as of early morning.

“Family members were in recent contact with him and he seemed fine,” Ward said.

A green Ford Ranger pick-up truck believed to belong to the suspect was searched outside the store by police.

During the standoff, police cut some of the electric service to the store, Ward said to LevittownNow.com.

Surrounding stores in the shopping center were evacuated a few minutes after 7 p.m. and a large crowd of bystanders gathered in the parking lot.

Police from around the lower portion of Bucks County rushed to the scene. By 9 p.m., a Lenco Bearcat armored truck was brought to the scene as a precaution.
