A longtime and recognizable face in the Bucks County law enforcement community has announced his bid for sheriff as a Republican.
Fred Harran, who currently works as the Bensalem Township public safety director, has gained the endorsement of the county Republican party and is seeking to run the sheriff’s office, which is current led by Sheriff Milt Warrell, who is running for reelection as a Democrat.

Harran said he brings 33 years in law enforcement experience and 15 in executive leadership to the race. He worked as a police officer in Bensalem Township, the most populated municipality with the biggest police department in the county, before working his way up to the top policing job.
“I have great working relationships with all the departments and have out-of-box approaches,” he said, noting he has been successful at obtaining grants and other funds to pay for a number of programs in his department.
If he gains the row office seat, Harran explained he would look to bring several programs, including assisting those dealing with drug addiction, to the sheriff’s office. He said another goal would be expanding a law enforcement-youth athletic league countywide to build relationships.

One of Harran’s goals is to speed up the time it takes to transport prisoners from out of county, he said.
Sheriff’s offices in Pennsylvania are law enforcement, but have a different role than municipal police departments.

Harran said there are a number of parts that make the justice system work and the sheriff’s office is just one piece.
“One part doesn’t work without the other,” he said.
