The officer, a department veteran, was on-duty at the time of the crash. It was not confirmed whether he was responding to a crash or call.

The officer’s condition was not immediately available as of Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

At the time of the single-vehicle crash, the SUV went across the grassy area surrounding the ramp, struck a tree, and ended up on its roof, law enforcement sources said.

Farry said firefighters had to cut open both sides of the SUV and free the officer, who was trapped by the mangled vehicle body and added police equipment in the console area. It took firefighters a little more than 30 minutes to free the officer.

Middletown Township police said the crash investigation is being handled by Falls Township police, who were not immediately available for comment.
