Tullytown officials and residents gathered at the Canal Park Saturday afternoon for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new recreational facility.

The park is located behind the Levittown Walmart and the Kenwood section. It is accessible via the shopping center’s parking lot or by a road leading behind Walmart.

Although the majority of the residents gathered for the opening of the park seemed the most excited about the playground equipment, the park has a lot more to offer the community at large. The park is equipped with bocce courts, a pavilion, a path and a gazebo.

The contract for construction of the park was awarded to James R. Kenney for $796,358.40. The borough’s public works department took care of some of the work such as planting trees, the mulch for the playground and more, saving the borough about $45,000, explained Alison Smith, the Tullytown Borough coordinator.

The park brings more recreational balance to Tullytown, said Mayor David Cutchineal.

State Rep. John Galloway was not in attendance, but had a prepared speech a representative from his office read to the assembled residents. The park offers endless benefits and spaces to socialize and a place for kids to play, the remarks from Galloway said.

“It’s great that we can finally make this something that kids now and in the future can enjoy,” said Mike Hammar, the chairman of the borough’s parks and recreation committee.

The playground includes a traditional swing set, a kind of see-saw, climbing equipment and a climbable rope-dome.

“It hasn’t really dawned on me yet that it is finished, but it is and it is great to finally see it being used,” Smith said as kids swarmed over the equipment.

The first phase of construction is complete, but according to Smith, there is a second phase of construction coming. The finer details on that phase and what it will bring to the park aren’t decided upon yet.

Construction on the park began with a groundbreaking ceremonyย in December.
