A shopping center was evacuated Monday evening after an underground electrical fire caused a potently dangerous situation.

The shopping center that houses the Fine Wine and Good Spirits store along with Coalition Nutrition and Cattani’s US 1 Beer on West Lincoln Highway was cleared early Monday evening after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected following a power outage, Penndel Fire Company Chief Chuck Fox said.

After power was restored, workers at the shopping center began to smell an odor and smoke was found coming from electrical meter boxes in the rear of the building. It was then the elevated carbon monoxide levels were linked to an underground electrical fire in PECO’s equipment, Fox said.

It took about 3.5 hours to secure power and firefighters cleared the scene around 8:15 p.m.

No injures were reported.
