Two Arrested, Woman Charged With Assaulting Cop After Shoplifting Call

A man and a woman were taken into custody after police said the two stole from a store and the woman allegedly bit one of the officers.

Police said the incident took place on Monday, June 22, just before 8 p.m. at the Target on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township. 

Police were dispatched for a retail theft reported in progress.

Surveillance cameras showed the two people walking together in the store. The woman hid clothing items in her purse, while the man switched his shoes with a new pair before putting the box back on the shelf, police said.

As the two exited the store, Target loss prevention stopped them. The total value of items stolen was $146.25, according to court records.

Officers arrived at the store and began to place handcuffs on the woman. As he did, she became combative and started yelling obscenities, police said.

As the woman was led out of the office, she continued to scream and at one point threw herself to the ground, police said.

When the two officers attempted to pick her up, the woman bit one of them in the forearm, causing the officer to bleed and bruise. He required medical attention at Jefferson Bucks Hospital in Falls Township, police said.

After searching the pair, officers found marijuana on them, police said.

 The woman, Jocelynn Carothers, 38, of Langhorne, is charged with attempted aggravated assault, simple assault, retail theft, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, and related offenses. She is jailed on 10 percent of $10,000 bail. 

The man, a 39-year-old Upper Southampton Township resident, is facing retail theft and marijuana-related charges. He was released on unsecured bail.
