PHOTOS: Northern Lights Spotted Above Levittown Area

A stunning display of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, dazzled spectators in region Thursday.

To mark the occasion, LevittownNow.com, NewtownPANow.com, and NewHopeFreePress.com has compiled images from readers of the Northern Lights.

The severe geomagnetic storm was rated 4 out of 5 in severity by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The strength of the storm allowed the lights to be visible far beyond their usual polar locations, including in Bucks County.

Observers were treated to the rare light show, which typically graces the skies closer to the Arctic. The heightened solar activity illuminated night skies as far down to Florida.

Photographs of the vivid displays began appearing on social media platforms around 7:30 p.m., with a second wave of posts around 10:30 p.m.

The Southern Hemisphere experienced its counterpart, the Aurora Australis, with notable views reported near Melbourne, Australia. The phenomenon is typically observed nearer to the Antarctic, according to NBC News.
