On a freezing night after Christmas in 2022, while returning from a holiday party with his family, Jake, a certified lifeguard and JROTC member, noticed a man lying on the ground beside a car with a woman signaling for help. He insisted on stopping to assist.
The man had slipped on a thick ice patch and was injured.

While others hesitated, Jake approached, introduced himself, and provided aid, ensuring the man’s airway was clear when he lost consciousness.
The local student monitored the man’s vital signs until EMTs arrived and then helped load the man onto a gurney despite the challenging ice.
Jake credited his lifeguard training and JROTC for his knowledge and sense of duty.

On social media, Fitzpatrick noted that Woodard’s experience with dyslexia had led him to be an advocate for special education policies.
