David J. Kaplan, a native of Petoskey, Michigan, has been captivated by the story of the Titanic since he was nine years old, his interest sparked by the 1953 film “Titanic.” Since then, Kaplan has dedicated his life to studying the tragedy, the ship, and its passengers. He has been a prominent member of the Titanic Historical Society for over 40 years, contributing significantly to the understanding and remembrance of the event.
Kaplan’s extensive research and passion have led him to meet 18 survivors of the tragedy, including Melvina Dean, the last living survivor, who passed away in May 2009. His commitment to preserving the history of the Titanic has taken him to numerous significant locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and he even visited the ship’s sinking location in the North Atlantic during the filming of the Imax movie “Titanica.”
