Last Sunday around 9:30 a.m., Middletown Township police responded to Jefferson Bucks Hospital in Falls Township for a report a man in the hospital reported he had been stabbed in the chest.

Officers responded and found the man. He had reportedly been stabbed at the Chesterfield Apartments on Veterans Highway, police said.

The victim claimed that he had gone to the apartment complex that morning to drop off clothes that belonged to his ex-girlfriend who was staying there with her new boyfriend. He saw his ex-girlfriend emerge from the apartment as he was leaving and turned around to talk to her, police said.

While the man was talking to his ex-girlfriend, Kevin Haile James, 22, of Middletown Township, exited the apartment and a fight ensued, police said.

According to police, the altercation moved inside the apartment and the man noticed a butcher-sized kitchen knife on the floor, asking James: “What? Were you going to stab me?”

After leaving, the man returned to his car and felt warm liquid around the center of his chest. At that point, he discovered he had, in fact, been stabbed and went to the hospital, police said.

The knife had been stopped by the injured man’s ribs, but the attack resulted in no injury to any organs, police said.

The injured man’s ex-girlfriend told investigators she knew of the altercation, but she did not witness the stabbing. However, she saw a knife on the apartment floor after the man left, police said.

A butcher knife was discovered in the kitchen sink during an apartment search. Blood was also seen on the knife by investigators, police said.

He was preliminarily arraigned by on-call District Judge Stacy Wertman and bail was set at 10 percent of $250,000.
