Francis Caputo, of Shavertown, Luzerne County, was arrested early last Thursday morning as borough police were investigating a burglary at the Mavis Discount Tires off Route 13, authorities said.
Police said officers were dispatched to the tire store for a burglary alarm indicating glass was broken on a window at 4:50 a.m. A responding officer spotted a man exiting the building through a broken window in the front garage area.
Once the man saw a marked patrol vehicle approaching, he ran away, police said.

A responding officer walked to the rear area of the business and spotted footprints in the wet grass, police said.
An officer found the man – later identified as Caputo – hiding in the weeds along a rear fence, police said.
Caputo immediately told an officer he was run off the road and needed help, police said.

Caputo was handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle, police said.
While in custody, Caputo reportedly said: “I didn’t go in there. I was just hiding because I was scared.”
Another officer arrived and found Caputo’s wallet inside the Mavis Discount Tires building, police said.
