A water pipe burst by a blaze Wednesday ended up helping put it out.

A person walking in the 500 block of West Richardson Avenue in Middletown Township’s Langhorne section saw smoke near a home and heard an alarm going off around 7:30 a.m. They called 9-1-1 to report what was happening.
Within four minutes of the dispatch, firefighters were on the scene and discovered the home was on fire.
No residents were home at the time.

Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company Chief Frank Farry said crews discovered the fire in the home’s utility room and made sure it was extinguished.
The heat from the fire caused a pipe to burst and water shooting from the pipe ended up putting down the bulk of the fire, Farry said.

While the utility room was damaged by fire and the burst pipe caused water damage in the house, Farry said the blaze could have been worse if not stopped quickly.
The fire was placed under control in about 15 minutes.
Don Harris, Middletown Township’s interim fire marshal, said the cause of the blaze was accidental, but the exact nature of the origin remains under investigation.
