A company that makes cardboard packaging is expanding.

The Falls Township Board of Supervisors in March approved preliminary and final land development for Tavo Packaging Inc. on Towpath Road/Canal Road off Newbold Road.

The company will be building a 77,100-square-foot warehouse addition onto their existing 169,833-square-foot facility, which is located on an 11-acre site.

Tavo Packaging makes the cartons used for holding items sold by Dunkin’, Taco Bell, KFC, and other companies.

Supervisor John Palmer noted the company did not have plans to plant street trees as part of the project. He asked if they would be interested in donating trees to the Falls Township Shade Tree Commission.

“I don’t see a reason why we wouldn’t,” a representative from the company told supervisors. “We love trees.”

The company’s property is not suitable for street trees because of overhead PECO lines, underground utilities, and utility right of ways, company representatives said.

In other business, the township will look at contracting with an arborist to develop a plan to remove trees that are dead or in poor condition.

The program started at township parks and has expanded over the years.

Supervisors Chairman Jeff Dence said wants the township to also look at replacing trees that are taken down.

“It’s our duty to replace trees that we’re removing,” Dence said.

Several supervisors agreed with Dence that an arborist could help the township develop a plan.

Falls Township Public Works Director Jason Lawson said the township needs take down about eight dead trees, but cutting them down is dependent on PECO shutting down their equipment, which has been delayed.

With Dence and Galloway voting against, the other three supervisors approved hiring Kent’s Quality Tree Service for tree trimming and removal. The work will be on an as-needed basis, while the township considers developing a tree removal plan.
