Bristol Borough Council will hear a proposal from Verizon to construct a cell phone tower during an upcoming meeting.

The council will accept Verizon’s request to go over their plan to construct a monopole structure at Bristol Borough Little League complex off Jefferson Avenue and Garden Street.

William Salerno, the borough solicitor, said the company is offering the borough $25,000 to $28,000 per year with a 5 percent increase yearly to rent the land from the borough.

The company first told council last fall that they wished to rent land at the baseball fields to construct a tower, two equipment cabinets at the bottom, a generator, and fence to fill a hole in their coverage area as data use increases.

In the time since, the company has suggested moving the tower closer to the train line to give additional space between the tower and areas where crowds gather.

Bristol Borough Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe said Verizon has said that if the local government refuses to grant the tower they will look to construct the facility on nearby private property.

There have been concerns from council members and the public over possible dangers of constructing a cell phone tower near baseball fields.

Councilman Tony Devine raised concern over Verizon renting space out on the tower for more antennas that could be harmful to residents’ health.

Last year, Verizon officials said the tower will comply with Federal Communications Commission rules and exposure safety limits.
