Bristol Borough is seeking grant funding to replace the closed and aging Maple Beach Road bridge.
The Borough Council voted Monday to apply for a $1.25 million Multimodal Transportation Fund Grant to replace the bridge.

The bridge, if replaced, would allow easier access off Maple Beach Road to the Bristol Borough Wastewater Treatment Plant. Presently, access to the plant is through the former Maple Beach neighborhood near the Burlington-Bristol Bridge in Bristol Township and the Dow Chemical plant.
The borough aims to fund the entire bridge replacement through grant money.
A plaque on the current bridge, which is only open for pedestrians, states it was constructed over Otter Creek in 1915. At one time, it was a connection between Bristol Borough and the Maple Beach section of Bristol Township. The neighborhood only includes a few homes after the former Rohm and Haas company began purchasing the neighborhood for their campus in the first part of the 20th century.

The borough received a $343,782 grant in 2017 from the county to improve access for pedestrians. Borough Manager Jim Dillon said the funds will still be used to increase public access to the Maple Beach area.
Doylestown-based Heritage Conservancy owns the area around the Maple Point Road bridge. They also own the nearby Bristol Marsh Nature Area, which is one of only a handful of freshwater tidal marshes along the Delaware River.
