Aqua Pennsylvania Asks Regulators For A Rate Increase

Water and wastewater rates for Aqua Pennsylvania customers may go up.

Aqua Pennsylvania has filed an application with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to raise rates for the first time in nearly seven years.

According to the application, Aqua Pennsylvania is looking to increase the typical bill for a customer using 4,080 gallons per month from $59.85 to $69.07, an increase of $9.22 per month. The average customer will pay $2.27 per day for using 134 gallons of water. The company is also seeking increases for wastewater customers.

If approved, Aqua Pennsylvania is asking to implement the increase on October 16, but state regulators have nine months to approve the company’s plan.

The company said the increase comes after they have spent $2.2 billion to improve infrastructure, including upgrades to facilities, wells, and distribution and treatment systems.

“We have replaced more than 800 miles of aging water main, as well as valves, service lines and more than 19,000 fire hydrants throughout our approximately 5,800-mile distribution system,” said Aqua Pennsylvania President Marc Lucca.

The company president added that the improvements will “help ensure our customers and communities have reliable water and wastewater service.”

Letters about the proposed rate increase were sent to local customers recently.

While the Aqua Pennsylvania has 450,000 customers in the state, it has about 29,000 customers in their Bristol system.
