Delays on SEPTA’s Regional Rail lines earlier this week were blamed on electrical equipment problems.

In a letter to riders of the West Trenton Line and several other branches of the train system, SEPTA officials said damage to the overhead electrical system that delivers current to Regional Rail trains caused delays Monday evening and Tuesday morning. The Lansdale/Doylestown, Warminster and West Trenton lines were impacted.

Crews who were mobilized Monday night were not able to find the problem and continued working into Tuesday morning. The two areas of damage were located Tuesday morning and power crews began working to make the fixes.

“Most times, a catenary problem creates a catastrophic issue for the train and the equipment coasts to stop a short distance from the source of the problem. In this scenario, cars traveled for some distance beyond the damaged area and continued to cause new damage, which made it more difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the overhead failure. Additionally, because trains on our system are routed to continue to other portions of our Regional Rail network, they can continue to cause damage, as we experienced today,” SEPTA officials wrote.
