The Bucks County Opportunity Council is celebrating 52 years of being active in the community.
According to the organization, May is Community Action Month, ” which raises awareness of the network of organizations dedicated to reducing poverty across the country.”

“Community Action Month is a wonderful time to honor and celebrate the impact that BCOC has in the lives of residents of Bucks,” stated Erin Lukoss, the organization’s executive director and CEO. “We serve nearly 10,000 Bucks families each year who need help to meet their basic needs. We are proud to have helped nearly 300 families go from poverty to thriving and economically self-sufficient, and countless other low-income families avoid homeless and hunger by helping them stabilize their financial situations during a crisis.”
“Given that the needs of each family and community are unique, Community Action and particularly the Opportunity Council are able to use a range of resources to meet these needs in impactful and creative ways,” according to Jeane Coyle, Chair of the Opportunity Council’s Board of Directors.
One of the creative programs is Fresh Connect, which started bringing produce to local families in need via a weekly event at the Bucks County Community College’s Bristol Township campus.

Officials said the BCOC reduces poverty through a number of programs geared towards increasing income and reducing reliance on government programs.
The BCOC will be hosting an event in New Hope in celebration of Community Action Month. The benefit will be held on May 6.
