A special program to give back to veterans at St. Mary Medical Center received a boost thanks to a cupcake fundraiser.
On Thursday, Terri Rivera, St. Mary Medical Center’s vice president for mission and community health, present a check for $2,400 to Joan Portman, coordinator of the hospital’s Healing Environments Veteran Appreciation Program. The donated money was raised directly from the hospital’s 6th Annual Cupcake Wars competition.

The Healing Environments Veteran Appreciation Program offers patients who are veterans the option to receive either a hand tied fleece blanket, crochet military blanket or neck roll pillow. The veterans also receive a wristband that alerts staff to thank the veteran for their service to the county.
The donated funds will go toward the purchase of military-patterned fleece used to sew handmade blankets and neck rolls for the veterans.
“St. Mary recognizes the great sacrifices our veterans have made for us so we can live in a free and just society,” said Portman. “They have given so much for us in service to this country. This is our way of thanking them for that service.”
