What was once a courtyard at Bristol High School is now a thriving vertical and community garden.

Recently, SCA, a Philadelphia-based global hygiene and forest products company, presented a $5,000 Environmental Education Grant to Bristol High School. The donation, much like one presented last year, will help fund the community garden that incorporates traditional and vertical garden structures.

Last summer, the garden grew fast-growing herbs, fruits and vegetables. The students’ goal was to produce enough food to use some in the school’s lunch menu.

The program is currently planning to add composting, a vertical herb wall and a greenhouse to extend the growing season.

Since SCA started it grant program in 2008, more than $300,000 has been doled out.
