The Bristol Township School District and its teachers’ union will be meeting for contract negotiations twice this week.

The Bristol Township Education Association, which represents roughly 500 teachers, announced Tuesday evening that “good faith” contract negotiations between district officials and union representatives are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

BTEA President Mary Berman told the school board that the union is willing to hold off on a proposed February teachers’ strike if they meet to try to nail out a deal.

The union has been without a contract for close to two years. Negotiations have broken down in recent months and meetings have stalled out. Berman said that a recent email from the district called the recent break down an “impasse.”

BTEA members have previously said raises and healthcare costs were sticking points in the contract impasse.

About two dozen BTEA members attended Tuesday evening’s meeting.

In November, BTEA members “voted overwhelmingly in support of strike authorization,” Berman said at the time.

According to state law, teachers would have to give 48 hours notice that they plan to strike.

The district and BTEA both declined further comment on the negotiations.
