In an effort to support science and technology research and education, the National Science Foundation has granted Bucks County Community College $350,000 to build a dedicated high-speed data network.
The project will upgrade technology in the under-construction, 38,000-square-foot Science Center under construction at the Newtown campus. The building will house laboratories for college’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) department.

“The goals of this project are to upgrade our cyberinfrastructure to support STEM and other research on campus by faculty and students involving the movement of large data through the network,” said Bucks County Community College Vice President and Chief Information Officer Dr. Andrew Lawlor. “The resulting dedicated network will prioritize data transfers among systems located at Bucks, add a high-performance WiFi network extension, and provide Internet2 to support faculty and student research through the statewide education network.”
Philadelphia’s University of Pennsylvania is the community college’s lead institution partner. The world-renowned university will help with he design, provide technical services to ensure the network will meet current and future needs and offer Bucks faculty and students access to scientific domains at a research institution, Lawlor said.
Community college officials said Lawlor worked with STEM Department dean Lisa Angelo, grant writers and other faculty to create the proposal for the science research network.

The Science Center is expected to open by December 2016.
