Pennsylvania Sate Police said they responded to I-95 in the area of the Maple Avenue (Route 213) overpass in Middletown around 1 a.m. Saturday for the reported crash.

A witness told a trooper the Mazda 6 driven by the Newtown man was traveling at a high rate of speed before making an erratic lane change and losing control. The Mazda skidded, spun clockwise, slid off the highway into the grass and then struck a tree on its driver-side door, according to a state police press release.

The driver-side of the vehicle was crushed in, the windshield was cracked and airbags deployed, state police said. Middletown’s Parkland Fire Company responded to the scene and freed the driver.

The driver suffered a broken clavicle, internal injuries, cuts and a bloody face. He was transported by the Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad to St. Mary Medical Center for treatment, state police said.

Troopers said the driver had an odor of alchol coming from his breath at the scene of the crash.

The investigation into the wreck was continuing as of Monday.
