Portion Of Road Expected To Be Renamed For Lawman Shot Dead By Bank Robber

Stuckey_GeorgeA portion of Bath Road in Bristol Township is expected to be renamed in honor of a police officer killed by a bank robber 43 years ago.

State Sen. Tommy Tomlinson (R-6) and State Rep. Tina Davis (D-141) are working in Harrisburg to get a section of the road renamed the “Sgt. George Stuckey Memorial Road.”

Stuckey was gunned down not far from police headquarters on March 29, 1972 after he pulled over three men who had robbed a bank in Levittown. One of the three suspects shot and killed the 7-year veteran of the department.

The measure to rename the road, House Bill 178, was amended in the Senate and is returning to the House for consideration. If approved, it will move on to Gov. Tom Wolf’s desk and will likely be approved, Tomlinson’s office said.

“We are pleased to be working with Representative Tina Davis and Senator Tommy Tomlinson on the renaming of Bath Road in memory of Det. George Stuckey. We thank the members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Senate and Governor Wolf for their assistance as well,” Daniel Doyle, president of the Bucks County Fraternal Order of Police and chief of the Tullytown Police Department, said in a statement.

Tomlinson called the effort “a fitting way to honor one of our local heroes.”

If approved, PennDOT will erect signs acknowledging the portion of Bath Road between Route 13 and Veterans Highway (Route 413) as the “Sgt. George Stuckey Memorial Road.”
