Despite the snow, the Rita’s Italian Ice on Lincoln Highway in Penndel had a steady stream of locals stopping by for their free cup of water ice on the first day of spring.

Jennfier Root, who operates the shop, said on an average first day of spring, the store gives away about 2,000 cups of water ice. Friday by 4 p.m., the store had only given away about 500 cups.

“This is definitely the worst first day of spring,” Root, who has operated the shop for three years, said.

James Stanley, a teenager from Bensalem, came out with his brothers and mom.

“Even with winter, I came out to get water ice,” Stanley said. The teen said he enjoys the frozen treat no matter what the weather is.

Root’s shop had a patio heater outside in the snow to keep customers in line warm.

Nationwide, Rita’s gave out more than 1 million cups of water ice on the first day of spring last year.
