According to police, an officer responded to the BP gas station after Lynch’s mother called police around 6 p.m. to say her son said he was robbed at gunpoint on April 7.

Lynch told a police officer who responded to take a report that he was robbed of cash by a man who first asked for a lighter around 1 p.m. outside the gas station, according to court papers.

The 33-year-old said the robber had a “.38 revolver” and ran south on Durham Road, according to police. Lynch also said the robber took $80 but later changed to between $75 to $80.

Police told Lynch a nearby check cashing business has a good camera system and an officer noted in an affidavit that Lynch then “became less confident in his answers.”

Lynch said he did not report the robbery right away because he did not want to, court papers say.

Officer Sean Perry told Lynch police were conducting a traffic detail on West Lincoln Highway around the time of the robbery and Lynch said he saw a state trooper but did not stop him, according to court papers.

Perry advised Lynch it was illegal to provide a false report to law enforcement, court papers say.

“I don’t like where this is going,” Lynch was reported to have stated.

Lynch then said he “made it up” and said he has “money issues,” court papers say.

From court documents:

Lynch further stated that he had made up the incident because he spent all of his money “paying off court costs” and that he did not want to tell his mom that is why he needed more money. After Lynch advised me that he made the whole story up, he stated several times “this is stupid” and “I should have never done this.” While on scene, Lynch entered his mother’s vehicle and he advised her that he was sorry and that he made the whole incident up.

Lynch is set to have a preliminary hearing on May 21 before District Judge Daniel Baranoski.
